University of the Philippines College of Music PhD Program in Music

The University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman College of Music is now accepting applicants to the Doctor of Philosophy in Music program, which will begin in academic year 2011-2012. Open to a holder of a master’s degree of any field but with a competency to explore music as an analytical object of human experience, this first and only program in the Philippines is designed for teachers teaching music and related professionals who would like to do research and pertinent musical creative processes with a view of producing new knowledge of music in Asia. Historically, UP College of Music has been at the forefront of music research in the Southeast Asian region and the opening of this program therefore inaugurates an important phase in the history of modern Asian music scholarship. In the program, the graduate faculty of the UP College of Music hopes to bring doctoral students to an advanced level of understanding music and in the process develop them professionally as independent critical thinkers who would then make an impact in the teaching of music as a human science in Southeast Asia.
